Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone (Irish: Aodh Mór Ó Néill; literally Hugh the Great O'Neill; c. 1550 – 20 July 1616) was an Irish Gaelic lord and key figure of the Irish Nine Years' War.

O’Neill, Hugh, Earl of Tyrone, was born about 1540. He was the second son of Matthew, Baron of Dungannon, the reputed son of Con O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone. Hugh’s elder brother died in 1562.
O'Neill, Hugh (c. 1550–1616), 2nd earl of Tyrone , the ‘Great O'Neill’, was second son of Joan Maguire and Matthew Feardorcha O'Neill (qv), who had been designated baron of Dungannon when Conn O'Neill (qv) arranged the surrender and regrant of Tyrone with the crown in 1542.
