Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, nato Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, noto anche con lo pseudonimo di E. T. A. Hoffmann (Königsberg, 24 gennaio 1776 – Berlino, 25 giugno 1822), è stato uno scrittore, compositore, pittore e giurista tedesco, esponente del Romanticismo.

E.T.A. Hoffman è stato un famoso scrittore e compositore tedesco del XIX secolo. Tra le sue opere più famose vi è “Undine”, un’opera basata su un testo rielaborato da Fouqué. “Undine” fu rappresentata per la prima volta a Berlino nel 1816.

Ingegno assai versatile ed eccezionalmente irrequieto, sfruttò le naturali doti artistiche soprattutto quale disegnatore e caricaturista, rivelando subito il suo carattere spregiudicato. Più serio fu il suo impegno di musicista; ammiratore e imitatore di Mozart fu fertile compositore.
