Johann Gottfried von Herder (/ ˈ h ɜːr d ər / HUR-dər, German: [ˈjoːhan ˈɡɔtfʁiːt ˈhɛʁdɐ]; 25 August 1744 – 18 December 1803) was a German philosopher, theologian, poet, and literary critic. He is associated with the Enlightenment, Sturm und Drang, and Weimar Classicism.
Estetico, letterato, storico e teologo tedesco, nato il 25 agosto 1744 a Mohrungen nella Prussia orientale, morto a Weimar il 18 dicembre 1803. Un bizzarro pedante gl'insegnò il latino, l'iniziò al greco e all'ebraico, alla filosofia e alla teologia; un diacono, certo Trescho, che si dilettava di lettere, ne fece il suo scriba.
