Aldhelm ( Old English: Ealdhelm, Latin: Aldhelmus Malmesberiensis) ( c. 639 – 25 May 709), Abbot of Malmesbury Abbey, Bishop of Sherborne, and a writer and scholar of Latin poetry, was born before the middle of the 7th century. He is said to have been the son of Kenten, who was of the royal house of Wessex. [1]

Aldhelm (born c. 639—died c. 709) was a West Saxon abbot of Malmesbury, the most learned teacher of 7th-century Wessex, a pioneer in the art of Latin verse among the Anglo-Saxons, and the author of numerous extant writings in Latin verse and prose.

Aldhelm. Aldhelm ( c. 639–709) was one of the most learned men of his time. Thought to be related to West Saxon kings and educated at Malmesbury under the Irish scholar Maildubh, he also studied briefly at the Canterbury school flourishing under Archbishop Theodore and Abbot Hadrian after 669.
St Aldhelm - Athelstan Museum. One of Maeldub’s pupils was Aldhelm, renowned for his scholarship across Europe. Aldhelm developed Maeldub’s school, built churches in Malmesbury and established the Benedictine monastic order here, gaining the support of both the Pope and King Ine of Wessex.
