Butch The Cougar is the mascot of Washington State University. [1] . As his name indicates, Butch is a cougar . History. Though the cougar was adopted as Washington State University's mascot in 1919 it was not until 1927 when a cougar cub was presented to the student body of Washington State that Butch T. Cougar was born. [2] .
Butch is the official mascot of WSU! He represents and evokes the spirit of WSU Cougs at events, on campus and in the community. WSU Tri-Cities is looking for enthusiastic students who would enjoy sharing their love of WSU Tri-Cities by performing as Butch T. Cougar beginning as early as July 2024 .

31 lug 2020 · It wasn’t until 1927, when then-state Governor Roland Hartley gave campus a live cougar cub, that Butch T. Cougar was born. The mascot was named for Herbert “Butch” Meeker, a football star of the era. Butch VI, the last of WSU’s live cougar mascots, was gifted to campus by then-state Governor Albert Rossellini in 1964.
