Chennai district, formerly known as Madras district, is one of the 38 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is the smallest and the most densely populated district in the state. The district is coterminous with the city of Chennai, which is administered by the Greater Chennai Corporation.

Chennai (/ ˈ tʃ ɛ n aɪ / ⓘ, Tamil: [ˈt͡ɕenːaɪ̯], IAST: Cennaī), formerly known as Madras, is the capital city of Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India. It is the state's primate city and is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal.
On 5 January 2018, the Chennai district was expanded by the addition of Madhavaram, Maduravoyal, Ambattur, Tiruvottriyur taluks and parts of Ponneri taluk of Tiruvallur district and Alandur and Sholinganallur taluks of Kanchipuram district.
