Irwin Thornton Catharine (October 22, 1883 – March 3, 1944) was the chief architect of Philadelphia public schools from 1920 until his retirement in 1937.
Designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built between 1929 and 1930, it is a three-story, eleven-bay bay, brick building that sits on a raised basement. It was designed in the Late Gothic Revival -style. An addition was built in 1954.
The school's building was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1924. It is a four-story, nine bay brick building on a raised basement in the Art Deco-style. It features an entrance portico with Doric order columns supporting an entablature.
Chiefly known as the architect of many of Philadelphia's public schools, Irwin T. Catharine was the son of Joseph W. Catharine, chair of the Philadelphia Board of Public Education and, no doubt, the encourager of his son's career.
