7 feb 2006 · Last Edited September 16, 2020. Canadian citizenship was first created in 1947 by the Canadian Citizenship Act. Today's version of the law says both Canadian-born and naturalized citizens are equally entitled to the rights of a citizen, and subject to the duties of a citizen.

In general a person is a Canadian citizen if: They were born in Canada. Note: A child born in Canada to an accredited foreign diplomat is not Canadian at birth unless the other parent is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident at the time of the child's birth ( 3 (2) of the Act ).
