3 giorni fa · It was when the territory was created that "Washington" became its name, in 1853. What is now the state of Washington was almost the state of Columbia. In 1851-1852 settlers in what's now Washington but at the time was part of Oregon Territory, organized and wrote up a petition to ask Congress to make a new territory north of the Columbia River.
