Paul Matthew Hoffert, LLD, CM (born 22 September 1943, in Brooklyn, New York) is a recording artist, performer, media music composer, author, academic, and corporate executive. He studied mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto. He later studied music composition with Gordon Delamont.
Lighthouse was formed in 1969 in Toronto by vocalist/drummer Skip Prokop, previously of the Paupers, and keyboardist Paul Hoffert. The two met on a flight from New York City to Toronto, and discussed forming a band structured around a rock rhythm section, jazz horn section, and classical string section.

Storia. La band si è formata a Toronto nel 1968 per iniziativa del cantante e batterista Skip "Ronn" Prokop e dal tastierista Paul Hoffert e inizialmente consisteva di 13 elementi. A partire dall'anno successivo ha intrapreso una intensa attività live tra Canada, Stati Uniti e Giappone.
Paul Hoffert has the soul of an artist and the mind of a scientist. Dr. Hoffert is Chair of the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund, Chair of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, Chair of the Glenn Gould Foundation Inc., and Professor of Music, Law, and Information Science at University of Toronto.
Paul Hoffert was already an accomplished film composer, arranger and performer who had released his first jazz album at the age of sixteen. On the side, he helped develop one of the first synthesizers at the National Research Council while finishing his degree in Maths, Physics and Chemistry at the University of Toronto.
