Utrecht is een van de oudste steden van Nederland. Het is ontstaan als een Romeinse fortificatie aan de Limes. In de zevende eeuw werd op de plaats waar dit fort zich bevond een kerkje gebouwd en in de eeuwen erna verrezen hier grotere kerken. In 1122 kreeg Utrecht als een van de eerste steden in het huidige Nederland stadsrechten.

La provincia di Utrecht è una piccola regione ad alta densità abitativa i cui lembi occidentali sono parzialmente inclusi nel Randstad, la più grande conurbazione dei Paesi Bassi che comprende, fra le altre, le città di Rotterdam e L'Aia.
La città è sede del primate cattolico dei Paesi Bassi e di un altro vescovo a capo della chiesa dei vetero-cattolici, che si staccò dalla chiesa di Roma in seguito alla enunciazione del dogma della infallibilità del papa, voluto da Pio IX nel 1870.
