I Bathory sono stati un gruppo black metal svedese formatosi a Vällingby, quartiere di Stoccolma, nel 1983. Sono ritenuti fondamentali per l'evoluzione del black metal nonché per aver contribuito alla nascita del viking metal.
Bathory was a Swedish black metal band formed in Vällingby in March 1983. Named after Hungarian countess Elizabeth Báthory, they are considered pioneers of black metal (alongside Venom and Mercyful Fate) and Viking metal. The book Lords of Chaos described Bathory's first four albums as "the blueprint for Scandinavian black metal."
Last label: Black Mark Production. Years active: 1983-2004. Bathory was one of the pioneers of the first wave of black metal and Viking metal. Formed in 1983 by Quorthon, Jonas Åkerlund, and Frederick Melander, the band didn't come up with a name until the recording of Scandinavian Metal Attack.
Bathory è in assoluto la prima band a realizzare, contenutisticamente (tramite l'anticristianesimo convinto) e tecnicamente (con l'assenza assoluta di tecnicismo) il black-metal come genere, la prima a istituzionalizzarlo e renderlo indipendente.
