Georgia (Georgian: საქართველო, romanized: sakartvelo, IPA: [sakʰartʰʷelo] ⓘ) is a transcontinental country in Eastern Europe and West Asia.
Georgia, country of Transcaucasia located at the eastern end of the Black Sea on the southern flanks of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. It was the site of the ancient kingdom of Iberia and of the medieval Bagratid dynasty. A former constituent republic of the Soviet Union, it became formally independent in 1991.
History by topic. The nation of Georgia ( Georgian: საქართველო sakartvelo) was first unified as a kingdom under the Bagrationi dynasty by the King Bagrat III of Georgia in the early 11th century, arising from a number of predecessor states of the ancient kingdoms of Colchis and Iberia.
