In 1553, due to a charter by King Edward VI, the school became known as the King's New School of Stratford-upon-Avon. During the years that Shakespeare attended the school, at least one and possibly three headmasters stepped down because of their devotion to the Catholic religion proscribed by Queen Elizabeth.

Little is known about his young life at the school, but it is possible to ascertain what life would have been like for him by looking at what school life was like in those days. Grammar School.
Stratford had a great grammar school, it’s now the King Edward’s School and, until a couple of years ago it was still only a boys’ school, as it was in Shakespeare’s time. In Shakespeare’s time, of course, education was more or less confined to males except at the very highest levels of society.
