Being relatively new to 40k i can't understate how much i've actually learned about 40k just by playing rogue trader. That's not to say it's only for newbies. the game explains what things are when you find them or if they come up in conversation with a built-in encyclopedia.
Ranking Archetypes and Origins. Rogue Trader: Builds. Based on my Unfair experience so far and a few runs or varied length testing stuff. Starting Archetypes from best to worst (on their own merit, not considering how well they combo with the 2nd archetype pick): Officer - pretty damn busted.
Beginner Advice (The Skills & Stuff Are Intimidating) Rogue Trader: Console. Not traditionally a WH40k guy. Play a lot of board games with friends but not typically full on table tops like D&D and Warhammer. Usually more simplified co-op stuff or fun vs games. Not huge on CRPGs either even though I respect em.
You are still adopting a role to play when you self-insert because you cannot be a Rogue Trader and make the decisions you do in real life.
