History. José Eusebio Boronda, a Californio ranchero, was granted Rancho Rincón del Sanjón in 1840, covering today's northwestern Salinas and Boronda. First Mayor's House circa 1868. The land that Salinas sits on is thought to have been settled by Native Americans known as the Esselen prior to 200 AD. [17] .
It wasn't until Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1822 that outside settlers began to arrive in Salinas. Named for a nearby salt marsh, Salinas became the seat of Monterey County in 1872 and incorporated in 1874. In the mid-1800s, Salinas' agricultural industry began to grow.

In March of 1973, Salinas native Lt. Cmdr. Everett Alvarez, who was captured August 5, 1964 and held by the North Vietnamese for eight years and six months, was honored with a “Welcome Home” day in Salinas that included presentation of a salad bowl, the traditional symbol of the Salinas Valley.
