Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is a play by Tom Stoppard that was first performed in 1966. It is a tragicomedy that follows the titular characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet , as they navigate the events of the play.
Infuriated by the Player's calm claims to understand death, Guildenstern stabs him and the Player falls and dies. But the dagger turns out to be fake and the Player stands up, alive and smug, having convinced Guildenstern with the very sort of acted death Guildenstern claims isn't convincing.
Minor figures in Shakespeare, the pair are the central characters in Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (produced 1966; film 1990). Stoppard’s characters play games, tell jokes, and have philosophical discussions in the intervals of time between the scenes in which they figure in Shakespeare’s play.
