He suffered a cervical spinal cord injury on May 4th, 2017 which paralyzed him from the neck down. When the injury occurred, he was not able to breathe on his own so a hole was made in his throat and a machine assisted with his breathing.

Updates on Takayama have been provided by wife via a blog on the Abema site. She posted on April 11th that Takayama is hospitalized with aspiration pneumonia.

It has been nearly six years since Yoshihiro Takayama’s cervical spinal cord injury which paralyzed him from the neck down. His wife revealed that Takayama is hospitalized currently with aspiration pneumonia.
After initial reports that Yoshihiro Takayama had been paralyzed from the neck down, it has now been announced that there is "no chance of recovery" for Takayama's injury and that he is now considered a quadriplegic. His condition is so bad, he apparently can't receive any guests.
