Kufa (Arabic: الْكُوفَة “al-Kūfah”), also spelled Kufah, is a city in Iraq, about 170 kilometres (110 mi) south of Baghdad, and 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) northeast of Najaf. It is located on the banks of the Euphrates River. The estimated population in 2003 was 110,000.

Kūfah, medieval city of Iraq that was a centre of Arab culture and learning from the 8th to the 10th century. It was founded in 638 ce as a garrison town by ʿUmar I, the second caliph. The city lay on the Hindiyyah branch of the Euphrates River, about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Al-Najaf.
