In 2021, its population was 45,874. The total area is 56.06 km 2 (21.64 sq mi). The agglomeration is much more populous, with 81,473 inhabitants.

Walking Turnhout’s city centre you may be stopped in your tracks by this moated castle, the origins of which go right back to the 1200s as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Brabant. The castle’s present Renaissance appearance is from the 16th century when Mary of Austria turned it into a luxurious residence.
An amiable city in a pleasant region that is brimming with history. Turnhout is rightfully proud of its 14th-century Beguinage, which was designated a UNESCO world heritage site. Turnhout Castle, known locally as the Castle of the Dukes of Brabant, is even older.
