Rodgers began working with Oscar Hammerstein II, with whom he had previously written songs (before ever working with Lorenz Hart). Their first musical, the groundbreaking hit Oklahoma! (1943), is a notable example of a " book musical ", a musical play in which the songs and dances are fully integrated into the plot.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s second musical tells the story of carousel barker Billy Bigelow, who falls for the fair young millworker Julie Jordan. Their romance leads to both of them losing...
