Simon Elwes (1902–1975) National Trust, Belton House. Portrait painter in oil, born at Theddingworth, near Rugby. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks, 1918–21, and in Paris, some time with André Lhote. Exhibited at RA from 1927 and was elected RA 40 years later.
Bede Evelyn Dominick Elwes (24 August 1931 – 5 September 1975) was an English portrait painter whose much publicised elopement with an heiress in 1957 created an international scandal.
His grandfather was society painter and war artist Simon Elwes. Cary (the surname "Cary-Elwes" was shortened to "Elwes" in some branches of the family) was an altar boy at London's Brompton Oratory, although he did not attend a Catholic high school.
Lt. Col. Simon Elwes (1902 – 1975) Simon was the sixth son of Gervase and Winefride. He was a famous war artist and portrait painter. He painted many members of the royal family and was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. In 1933 Simon was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
