As the wife of Adolphe of Nassau, she was Duchess of Nassau from 1851 until 1866 and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg from 1890 until 1905.

When the Grand Duchess, described as a very intelligent and cultured woman, passed away in 1916, not only did the wife of the first Grand Duke disappear, but also the grandmother of the Luxembourg dynasty. Adelheid Marie is buried in the princely crypt of the Nassau family in Weilburg.

Facing the German invasion in 10 May 1940 during World War II , the Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg left the country to find refuge in Portugal , after receiving transit visas from the Portuguese consul Aristides de Sousa Mendes , in June 1940.
