The Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald in German pronounced [ˈtyːʁɪŋɐ ˈvalt] ⓘ) is a mountain range in the southern parts of the German state of Thuringia, running northwest to southeast. Skirting from its southerly source in foothills to a gorge on its north-west side is the Werra valley.
Located in the heart of Germany, the Thuringian Forest is an idyllic region of lush green landscapes, charming villages and remarkable history. Stretching some 120 kilometres from north-west to south-east, it is one of Central Europe's most attractive destinations for nature lovers, hikers and history buffs alike.
It has been known as "the green heart of Germany" (das grüne Herz Deutschlands) from the late 19th century due to its broad, dense forest. Most of Thuringia is in the Saale drainage basin, a left-bank tributary of the Elbe. Thuringia is home to the Rennsteig, Germany's best-known hiking trail.
