8 mag 2024 · Canute the Great, king of England and Denmark, founded a Benedictine abbey at St. Edmund’s shrine in 1020. The shrine became a place of pilgrimage, and from it the town took its name in the 11th century. Bury St. Edmunds received a royal charter of incorporation in 1606.
