Welsh racing driver Tom Pryce died on the tracks during the South African Grand Prix in Kyalami on 5 March 1977. The horrific accident left two people dead; a marshal Frederick Jansen Van Vuuren, who was running across the tracks to help another driver whose car had caught fire and Pryce himself.

Both the driver (Tom Pryce) and the Marshall died. Tom was hit in the head by the fire extinguisher the Marshall was carrying, it was so fast that the helmet's strap decapitated Tom's head. It is also said that it was the Marshall's first day on the job.
The pit straight after The Kink is where Pryce collided with Jansen van Vuuren, and Crowthorne Corner is where Pryce's and Jacques Laffite's cars collided, with Pryce already dead. On lap 22, Zorzi pulled off to the left side of the main straight, just after the brow of a hill and a bridge over the track.
