It was designed by Robert Adam and was home to four British Prime Ministers: Shelburne himself, the Earl of Bute, Pitt the Younger, and the Earl of Rosebery.
Lansdowne House in Berkeley Square had the dubious distinction of belonging to two of the most unpopular British statesmen of the eighteenth century. It was begun about 1761 for the prime minister, John Stuart (1713–1792), third earl of Bute, who left office in 1763 in political disgrace.
Lansdowne House, located adjacent to Berkeley Square, was begun by Lord Bute. Architect Robert Adam, had not finished the house when it was sold to William Petty-Fitzmaurice (1737–1805), Earl of Shelburne, later named first Marquess of Lansdowne.
