Oatlands Palace is a former Tudor and Stuart royal palace which took the place of the former manor of the village of Oatlands near Weybridge, Surrey. Little remains of the original building, so excavations of the palace took place in 1964 to rediscover its extent.
Oatlands Palace was originally built for King Henry VIII in 1537. Although it was a notable new addition to the Tudor king’s plethora of royal dwellings at the time, much of the stone used to construct this great royal residence actually dated back to the Norman era.
After Charles’ execution in 1649 Cromwell ordered the sale of much of the crown’s property, including the contents of Oatlands Palace, the value of the estate being about £4000. It was bought by a Robert Turbridge, who demolished it, and from 1651 the bricks were sold to Sir Richard Weston of Sutton Place near Guildford to build locks and ...
Today its site is covered by a housing estate. But in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century Oatlands was as well known as a royal palace as Hampton Court. Oatlands had originally been built by Sir Bartholomew Read a fabulously rich London Goldsmith and sometime Master of the royal Mint.
OATLANDS PALACE. While not as famous as some of the other royal residences, Oatlands Palace, on the bank of the River Thames in Surrey, was an important place in the Tudor period. The palace was built by King Henry VIII for his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, and it stood on the site of an old medieval manor.
