Története. Kezdetek. A Szilágyi Erzsébet Gimnázium elődje, a Budapest fővárosi első kerületi nyilvános községi polgári leányiskola, 1881. szeptember 1-jén kezdte meg működését. Ebben az időben még kevés középszintű állami leányiskola volt Magyarországon, ez a budai iskola az elsők között nyílt meg.
