Kansanedustajana Aho toimi vuosina 1983–2003 ja Keskustan puheenjohtajana vuosina 1990–2002. [3] . Aho oli Tarja Halosen vastaehdokkaana vuoden 2000 presidentinvaalien toisella kierroksella.
