    The Latin name Cortoriacum means the settlement near the curb in the river.[citation needed]There is also mention of 'Cortoracum' in some literature. Its name later evolved to 'Cortrycke', 'Cortryck' and 'Kortrijk' (19th century). In French and in English, the city is called Courtrai.
