Charterhouse Square is a garden square, a pentagonal space, in Farringdon, in the London Borough of Islington, and close to the former Smithfield Meat Market. The square is the largest courtyard or yard associated with the London Charterhouse, mostly formed of Tudor and Stuart architecture restored after the London Blitz.

Step off the busy streets into Charterhouse Square, an oasis on the edge of the City of London. This short tour introduces the architecture of the square including the evocative remains of a Carthusian monastery and a landscaped garden with a surprising history hidden beneath the surface.
The Charterhouse gardens include Charterhouse Square and six courtyard gardens within the walls of a historic building. The gardens are open to the public, support the wellbeing of the Brothers, and are a habitat for wildlife.
This square and its gardens are just round the corner from both the Barbican complex and the Smithfield Meat Market, but its true relevance goes back into mediaeval times when The Charterhouse was established as a Priory in 1371 and formed much of two sides of the square.

21 ott 2019 · The Charterhouse. “In the nation’s history since 1348”, Charterhouse opened to visitors last year and allows Londoners the chance to explore over 600 years of history. You can visit the chapel and museum for free but I was recently invited to join one of their tours.
