Welbeck Abbey. Set in 15,000 acres of rolling parkland on the edge of Sherwood Forest, the estate surrounding the historic Welbeck Abbey is no stranger to reinvention and change. From its foundations as a monastery in 1153, it became a Cavalier residence before its later role as the country seat to a succession of Dukes of Portland.

Welbeck Abbey in the Dukeries in northern Nottinghamshire is a grand country house, long the seat of the Dukes of Portland (a title now extinct).
Welbeck Abbey (listed grade I), a stone-built L-shaped building, stands in the centre of the site, west of Shrubbery Lake. The entrance front to the west is of two storeys, with three-storey towers at each end and a central four-storey pedimented entrance with a Baroque-style porte-cochere.
Welbeck Abbey - House Library. The 6 th Duke of Portland added many items to the collection here at Welbeck, but perhaps most notable was his interest in books. There are currently 1342 books and pamphlets catalogued by the curatorial team, which we know belonged to the bibliophile Duke.
