Doberan Abbey (Kloster Doberan) is a former Cistercian monastery in Bad Doberan, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The Brick Gothic church continues in use as Doberan Minster (Doberaner Münster).
The Doberan Minster is the main Lutheran Church of Bad Doberan in Mecklenburg, Germany. Close to the Baltic Sea and the Hanseatic city of Rostock, it is the most important religious heritage of the European Route of Brick Gothic. It is the remaining part of Doberan Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery dedicated in 1368.
Bad Doberan was documented in 1177 as villa Slavica Doberan, but as early as 1171 Cistercian monks from Amelungsborn Abbey in the Weser Uplands founded a monastery in the Althof three kilometres southeast of the town, now a suburb of Bad Doberan.
Welcome to the Minster of Bad Doberan. The most well preserved Cistercian furnishings in Europe. Along the "European Road of Gothic Brick Architecture" in north eastern Germany, close to the old Hanse city of Rostock, is the Minster of Bad Doberan, the Ex-Cistercian abbey dedicated in 1368.
The heart and highlight of the former monastery complex is the High Gothic brick church of St Mary, the Doberan Minster, with its rich medieval decor. To the north-east sits the ossuary (around 1250), an architectural gem based on an octagonal ground plan.
