'Existing' slightly suggests a contrast with ones that will exist in the future, which doesn't make a great deal of sense in the context. 'Languages that exist' doesn't have that suggestion, and is equivalent to 'extant languages'. C.
1 feb 2015 · If it's any help, I've only heard the English "extant" used of rare books or old manuscripts, to mean "known to presently exist": e.g. "Of the 300 copies known to have been printed in 1650, only 3 are extant." It would be downright peculiar--not just bureaucratese--to use "extant" to mean what is commonly termed "at large."

4 ago 2005 · Yes. As Aupick wrote, when dare or need is used as a modal, they don't take 's' in the third-person singular of the present tense, like all modals. I think what Aupick worte is very good (simple,clear and precise), that's how we were taught in school. By the way, we call it as "modal auxiliary verb".
