  2. 1 feb 2015 · If it's any help, I've only heard the English "extant" used of rare books or old manuscripts, to mean "known to presently exist": e.g. "Of the 300 copies known to have been printed in 1650, only 3 are extant." It would be downright peculiar--not just bureaucratese--to use "extant" to mean what is commonly termed "at large."
