Philip Snowden, 1st Viscount Snowden, PC (/ ˈ s n oʊ d ən /; 18 July 1864 – 15 May 1937) was a British politician. A strong speaker, he became popular in trade union circles for his denunciation of capitalism as unethical and his promise of a socialist utopia.

His first ministerial post was the chancellorship of the Exchequer in the first Labour government (1924). His cautious policy incurred criticism from Labour's left wing, but he shared Ramsay MacDonald's determination to prove Labour ‘fit to govern’ by financial orthodoxy.
This broadcast is given credit for the defeat of Labour at the election, but moved up to the House of Lords, as Viscount Snowden of Ickornshaw the first prominent Socialist to do so. He became Lord Privy Seal in the new government, but resigned in September 1932 when it abandoned ‘Free Trade’.
