An der Realisierung von Killing Season waren die Filmproduktionsgesellschaften Millennium Films, Corsan, Nu Image Films und Promised Land Productions beteiligt. Für den Film war anfangs der Titel Shrapnel geplant. Der bezog sich auf den Granatsplitter in Fords Bein. Anstelle von Robert De Niro war Nicolas Cage für dessen Rolle vorgesehen.

Sarà un duello che tra colpi di scena, torture e ribaltamenti di fronte, conditi da immagini durissime e sanguinolente, si concluderà solo alla fine del film. Proprio quando De Niro riuscirà a raccontare la fine della barzelletta, che come dice lui stesso, non fa molto ridere, ma che comunque segna una sorta di riappaciificazione con la vita e la vittoria sui propri incubi.
