She is a devoted mother and grandmother, and her family has been her primary source of motivation and inspiration. In November 1976, Alakija wed lawyer Modupe Alakija of the Adeyemo Alakija family.
Sir Adeyemo Alakija was a newspaper entrepreneur who co-founded the Daily Times of Nigeria. lieutenant was this self-assertiveness that led his family to abandon their assimilated Portuguese name in favour of a native one, Alakija, in 1913.

Alakija was born on May 25th, 1884 as Placido Adeyemo Assumpçao in Lagos, Nigeria. He was descended from freed Brazilian slaves who had returned to Nigeria, which was common at the time. He kept the name Assumpçao until 1913 when he and his family were swept up in the tidal wave of nationalism in Nigeria at the time.
