John Francis Regis, Jean-Francois Regis in his native language, was a Jesuit saint who lived 1597-1640. Known as the “Father of the Poor,” he was a teacher, missionary and champion of the outcast in the Massif Central, a mountainous district of France located west of the Alps. 1877 is the founding date of the University.
