The school is named after Saint Margaret Ward, a Roman Catholic martyr who was executed during the reign of Elizabeth I for assisting a priest to escape from prison.

Year 11 students from St Margaret Ward Catholic Academy, Tunstall celebrated after collecting their GCSE results at a time that marks the first official results day since the COVID-19 pandemic.
