Taking an ‘analogical’ approach to the issue, this study reads the saga of Atiya Fyzee’s relationship with Shibli Nomani and Allama Iqbal as a plausible allegory of the transforming cultural relationship of the Muslims of the subcontinent with English (in what this term comes to mean as a language, as a discipline of studies, and as a synecdoche of Western culture).
In the 1930s two of his plays were staged in London, choreographed by his wife, Atiya Fyzee-Rahamin, an important author, performer and patron of the arts, who belonged to a prominent Muslim family in Bombay. Prior to their marriage in 1912, Samuel converted to Islam and both he and Atiya unusually took each other’s family names.

8 ott 2018 · Born in Istanbul, Atiya Fyzee was the daughter of Haji Hassanally Feyzhyder, an Indian merchant attached to the Ottoman Court, and his first wife, Amirunnisa binte Mulla Shujauddin Tyabji. Belonging to the prominent Tyabji clan of Bombay, Atiya was one of the first elite Indian Muslim women to receive a modern education, appear in public unveiled and participate in women’s organizations.
