He and his second wife had two sons. Justice Thurgood Marshall retired from the Court in 1991 and died in 1993 in Bethesda, Maryland of heart failure at the age of 84.

His father William was a railroad porter and later steward at a whites only country club. His mother Norma was a public school teacher for over 25 years.
