"Synecdoche, New York" ist Kaufmans erste Regiearbeit und wenn man seine vorherigen Drehbücher und die realisierten Filme dazu kennt, dann kennt man auch Kaufmans Faible für den aussergewöhnlichen Stoff. Er lässt sehr gerne die Grenze von Realität und Traum verschwimmen, ohne dafür zu sehr ins Fantasy Genre einzutauchen.
