Patrice Chéreau nasceu em Lézigné, Maine-et-Loire, e foi para a escola em Paris. Ainda jovem, tornou-se conhecido para os críticos parisienses como diretor, ator e diretor de cena da sua escola de teatro. Aos 15 anos, foi entusiasticamente comemorado como um prodígio do teatro. Em 1964, com 19 anos, começou a dirigir para teatro profissional.

De ouders van Patrice Chéreau waren beide artiesten en hijzelf raakte al vroeg in de ban van het theater. Hij groeide op in Parijs, waar hij naar het Lycée Louis-le-Grand ging. Daar richtte hij een theatergroep op, die hij regisseerde en waarin hij zelf speelde en waarvoor hij decors en kostuums ontwierp.

Et c'est bien par rapport au théâtre, avec et contre lui, qu'il construira dès lors aussi son parcours de cinéaste.
