'panique' is a fine example of the mood in post-war france, as bleak as any american film noir from the period. duvivier hasn't really resonated with me in the past but this simenon adaptation with its nightmare carnival atmosphere changed that. michel simon stars as monsieur hire, a strange loner with a penchant for peeking through windows who becomes a scapegoat for murder.
