1969 continues Woody Allen remade ‘Don’t Drink the Water’ for TV in 1994, 25 years after this film version of his play came out. Although produced by Charles H. Joffe the 1969 version doesn’t feel anything like a Woody Allen movie.
The Hollander family's European vacation is interrupted when their plane is forced to land in Vulgaria. The Hollanders leave the plane to take pictures which results in accusations of spying. Chased by Vulgarian soldiers, they take refuge in the American Embassy under the protection of the absent ambassador's hapless son.

Don't Drink the Water just seemed flat in 1969, when TV star Jackie Gleason could carry a joke just by mugging; now the film is almost unwatchable. The script adds a reel of new material showing the Hollanders' vacation preparations, all inter-cut with annoying animated titles.
