Nacque a Schledtstadt l'11 novembre 1491, entrò nell'ordine dei domenicani nel 1506 e, nel gennaio 1517, nell'università di Heidelberg, dove studiò le nuove opere degli umanisti. Ottenne la laurea di teologia e divenne maestro di arti liberali; poi fu ordinato sacerdote.
