1 feb 2017 · Although the Baphomet drawn by Eliphas Lévi (i.e., Alphonse-Louis Constant, 1810–1875) is one of the most famous esoteric images worldwide, very little is known about its context of emergence.
23 feb 2018 · Until his death on May 31st, 1875, Lévi made a living from his magical work, through the books he wrote and lessons that he taught. Not only was he popular in the 1850s Spiritualism movement, but his popularity continued to spread after his death as well. Lévi’s work was and still is so appealing because of its naivety.
Eliphas Levi died on May 31st, 1875 and his books remain in print well over 100 years after his death. It is however, his illustrative representation of Baphomet that found its way into Waite’s Tarot deck as the Devil card and has in the process added another page to the Baphomet Mythos and perhaps added to demonizing something that may have had a more innocent interpretation.
