Mary McLeod Bethune was born in Mayesville, South Carolina, on July 10, 1875. She was the fifteenth of seventeen children born to parents, who, along with eight of her older siblings, had been enslaved. Despite their financial struggles, the family purchased five acres of land from their former master, and their fortunes improved.
