15 set 2022 · The Chapel is a living, working church, forming part of the Old Royal Naval College at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. It hosts regular services and lunchtime recitals, as well as special events, concerts, and weddings, and attracts visitors from around the world.
This glorious Chapel was built by Thomas Ripley to the designs of Sir Christopher Wren and was the last major part of the Royal Hospital for Seamen to be constructed. Following a disastrous fire in 1779, it was redecorated by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart in the Greek revival style, and today is a wonderful example of a complete neoclassical interior.
Covering the Visitor Centre, the grounds and the stunning Chapel of St Peter and St Paul, you can learn the estate’s 600 years of history from its origins as a 1420s manor house, rebuilt as Greenwich Palace for Henry VII; to the commissioning of Sir Christopher Wren in 1694 for the design of a Royal Hospital for Seamen which it remained, up until 1873 when it became the Royal Naval College.
